The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) has released the FY 2009 Project Safe Neighborhoods grant announcement. Each of the 94 PSN districts will select a fiscal agent to apply for this program. Fiscal agent applicants are limited to states, units of local government, educational institutions, faith-based and other community organizations, and private nonprofit organizations. The application deadline is July 13, 2009. For more information, visit www.ojp.usdoj.gov/BJA/grant/psn.html.
The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) has released an evaluation of the development and implementation of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program. The evaluation found a greater decline in violent crime in cities that implemented PSN programs than in cities that did not, with the greatest reductions found in cities with a high level of federal prosecution.
